Testing of your fiber installation work should be based on customer requirements or EIA/TIA standards. Many new OTDR units have EIA/TIA standards built in and will even let you input specific requirements before testing your fiber links. If bi-directional testing is required, remember that is two shots for every cable (one from each end of cable being tested). If using an OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer), you’ll often only need one test technician, where-as with an Optical Loss Test Set, you’ll always need two test technicians. Baseline OTDR tests only require one shot but you will need 2 fiber launch cables and technicians to perform correctly. To save time and extra trips to the jobsite, consider having a 3rd tech available to make repairs on the spot for any links that do not pass certification testing.
